to Korea

There is something nobody keeps reminding you about, so it is easy to push it to the back of your mind: This move might not be forever.

When you first move to the U.S., it can feel like you have enough time. But a parent's company assignment usually lasts only a few years, and sometimes it ends earlier than anyone expected. When that happens, a big question can land on you very quickly:

• Should I stay in the U.S. and continue preparing for U.S. college admissions?
• Or should I return to Korea with my family and prepare for the Korean university path?

The difficult part is not only choosing between the two. The harder part is being asked to choose before you fully understand what each option actually means.

Staying in the U.S. may sound like the best way to protect your school life, friends, transcript, and college plan. But it can also involve residency rules, visa status, guardianship, housing, tuition, and living away from your family.

Returning to Korea may sound simpler because you are going “home.” But it can also mean adjusting again to a different school system, different testing style, different social environment, and a different college admissions process.

That is why this page exists.

Not to tell you which choice is right, but to help you understand the options before the decision becomes urgent.

From experience

There is no single right answer. It depends on your age, what grade you are in, your school situation, your visa or residency status, how settled you have become, your college goals, your family's financial situation, and whether you are emotionally ready for that path. Two students in almost the same situation can make opposite decisions and both be right.

So do not wait until the assignment is almost over to think about the return plan. Even if you end up staying in the U.S., knowing your options earlier gives you more control.
